An innovative new surf contest format called Torched made an exciting debut at Queenscliff, Manly today. ASP World Champion Mick Fanning, who is presenting Red Bull Junior Surf Masters, was among the large crowd on hand to soak up all the high performance surf action.
“There has been some great surfing today. I’ve been really impressed with the standard,” said Fanning. “I think this contest format really pushes the guys to surf at their peak because you’re only scored on your best wave (instead of your two best rides). The event is a really big opportunity for a junior surfer to launch a career in the sport.”
The other major difference with the Torched format is that heats last for eighty minutes and are divided into four twenty minute stages. After each stage the lowest scoring surfer is eliminated from the contest or “Torched”. “It’s more interesting for spectators because the guys go for bigger maneuvers and take more risks on their waves,” said Fanning.
